Leo Schuler Dies at 58 In Hospital
Served as Deputy, Was Active in Fraternal Groups.
Deputy Sheriff Leo G. Schuler 58, 404 N. Madison St., former supervisor of the Fourth Ward and prominent in fraternal organizations, died at 11:55 o'clock last night in Rome Hospital. He been in failing health for some time.
Mr. Schuler was born in Verona, Oct. 1, 1887, the son of Leo and Matilda Allison Schuler. He came to Rome about 45 years ago, and had resided here since.
In St Peter's Church. June 21, 1911, he married Nora Spellicy, the Rt Rev Msgr James J Carson, M.R.,VF. performing the ceremony. He was a member and treasurer of the Holy Name Society and head usher and treasurer of the Usher's Society.
A Republican, Mr Schuler served as supervisor from 1928 to 1937. He was appointed dealer of weights and measures for one term, Jan 1, 1938. He had been a deputy sheriff since July 1942.
Former Car Dealer
In 1909 Mr Schuler opened a cigar store on S James St near the American Corner and continued business there until 1929.

He was an Oldsmobile dealer for several years and later was connected with Woodruff Bros, Chevrolet Co as salesman until 1941. Mr Schuler was a past exalted ruler B.P.O. Elks, past grand knight of Rome Council 39, Knights of Columbus, past president Independent Hose Co NO 1, member of Firemen's Benevolent Association and of the Sons of Veterans.
Besides his wife, he leaves five daughters, Mrs Robert Whitmyer, Mrs Richard Baader, Naples; Mrs George Brenon, Theresa and Constance; four sons Leo Jr, Donald E, Lawrence J. and Winston C all of Rome; three brothers, Edward, Albert, and Frank, all of Rome; two sisters Mrs Michael McGarty, and Mrs Helen Schmultz, Oneida, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
