Lydia was born to Obediah Peden and Esther Dunne on Nov. 20th, 1783 in York County, PA. In her father's will of Oct. 1822, he gave his surname as PEDEN and referred to Lydia as "Liddy". Later the town name was spelled PADEN CITY. All of Obediah's ancestors in PA spelled their name, PEDEN.

The family moved to Tyler Co. WV and lived on her father's large farm, near what became Paden City. Lydia grew up with her siblings, Samuel, William, Rebecca, Obediah H., James, Esther, Jesse "Iepe" and Joseph Paden.

She married Thomas Ankrom in 1806.
