William Paden was born to Obediah Peden and Esther Dunne, in York Co. PA. The family later moved to Paden City, WV, where his father acquired a huge farm of 5,000 to 6,000 acres. He grew up with his siblings Samuel, Rebecca, Isaac, Obediah, James, Esther, Jesse, and Joseph Peden/Paden. The family surname was spelled Peden up and through the 1822 will of Obediah. The spelling changed to Paden after Obediah's death, thus Paden City, in his honor. At the time of William's death the surname was still spelled Peden, but I have changed it on this memorial to match the spelling on his monument.

William married Francis "Fanny" Ewart, on Jan. 1806. They moved to Virginia where their only child, Drusilla W. Paden was born on Nov. 20, 1806. William died about 2 weeks before her birth at age 28 years.

"Fanny" later remarried to Henry Collins. Drusilla married Nathan Cordray and lived in Grandview, WA Co. Ohio. She died Sept. 27, 1893.
