On June 9, 1929, he married Mary E. Haycock of Cherryfield. They had made their home in Bangor for the past four years. At the time of his illness, he was an electrician at the University of Maine. He is survived by his wife Mary E. Backman and daughter Elizabeth A. Backman of Ellsworth, Maine.
The funeral services were held at the Advent Christian Church on Beals Island, Maine of which he was a loyal member with Rev. Blackstone officiating.
Burial was in the Sewall Field Cemetery on Beals Island but later transferred to Woodbine Cemetery in Ellsworth, Maine.
