WINTER HARBOR - Donald L. Backman Sr., 83 husband of Pluma (Tracy) Backman, died Oct. 4, 1995, at a local health-care facility. He was born on Beals Island, April 24, 1912, the son of Herman and Estella Backman Sr. He graduated from Beals High School, class of 1931. He was an avid backetball player in high school. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.
He is survived by his wife Pluma of 44 years; two sisters, Laura and her husband, Calvin Beal of Beals, Maine and Rebecca Graves of Quincy, Mass.; one brother Herman Backman, Jr. and his wife Norma of Beals, Maine.CHERRYFIELD - Donald L. Backman, Jr.,60, died at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Born at Beals July 1, 1932, he was the son of Donald and Hildreth (Alley) Backman. He was a longtime employee of Linnehan Ford of Ellsworth until becoming the sales manager of Blueberry Ford in Cherryfield in 1991. During the Korean War he served as a boson's mate third class on the Destroyer USS NOA. He was an active menber of the Narraguagus Snowmobile Club of Cherryfield and the Milbridge-Cherryfield Rotary Club. He was also a member and past master of the Winter Harbor Lodge #192 AF&AM.
Surviving are his wife, Leah Backman, Rebecca Backman of FL; mother Hildreth Alley Backman.
