Herman Backman Sr. got a job on a steamer at age 15 and wanted to see America. He worked his way overland to Hamburg, Germany and on December 15, 1889 shipped out on a steamer loaded with sugar bound for Philadelphia, PA. After seeing all of Philadelphia and the Liberty Bell, Mr. Backman decided that he would stay in America. He then got a job as a sailor on a square rigged barkentine bound for Cuba with a load of coal making several trips to Cuba and then took a job on a two-masted schooner, the "Emmaline", skippered by Capt. Eben Alley of Beals, Maine. Herman eventually decided to make Beals Island his home and when Herman was 25 he gave up sailing and went into the lobster business.

Inscription

Herman was probably born March 7, 1874 in Karkmo, Mustasaari on Backman homestead, but the family used the family name Back. Birthdays book are not online, but in the parish book have Herman the year of birth 1874, which means that the gravestone has the wrong year.
