Horace Richard Amidon was born March 9, 1908, the ninth and youngest child of Hattie Amidon. He graduated from Toledo High School in 1926 and worked at the Toledo Chronicle. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1932 with a degree in art. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in North Africa and Italy. Following the war, he returned to the Chicago area before moving with his family to Burlington, Iowa, where he worked for the Burlington Hawkeye newspaper. In 1952 he purchased the Solon Economist, where he served as publisher until 1961. He then worked for the University of Iowa press until his retirement. He was a member of the International Typographical Union for over 50 years.
