Hollis Amidon, brother of Toledo women, dies at 78

Word has been received in Toledo of the death of Hollis D. Amidon, 78, of Indianapolis, Ind., a former Toledo resident, on Monday, Aug. 8, at the Veterans Hospital, where he had been a patient for a little over a month. Born May 19, 1899 in Toledo, he was the son of Henry S. and Hattie Criley Amidon. He was reared in Toledo and attended the Toledo School until the age of 17, when he joined the army and served for 30 years, being discharged as Master Sgt. After the first World War he served in the Army of Occupation in Germany for several years and also served in World War II. He was married during the second World War to Rebecca Gostage Sept. 8, 1937 at Covington, Ind. and for a short time they made their home in Florida, then moved to Indianapolis, where they have since resided. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mrs. Hazel Wilson of Chicago, and a brother, Harry E. Amidon of Ida Grove. Survivors include his wife, two brothers, Herbert W. Amidon, Illinois City, Ill., and Horace R. Amidon of Iowa City, four sisters, Mrs. Charles (Helen) Galey, Lombard, Ill., Mrs. H.H. (Hester) Proffitt of Huntington Beach, Calif., Mrs. Hariette Allen and Miss Henriette Amidon of Toledo, and nieces and nephews. Services will be held in Indianapolis at 1 p.m. Thursday with burial there with full military rites. Mrs. Allen and Henriette left Wednesday to attend the services.
