Son of Adam and Mary Shatto

Married: Mary Magdalena Ohl October 1834 in Trumbull County, Ohio

Children:
Isaac T. - 1 April 1835
Mary - 24 October 1837
Henry Adam - 8 June 1840

Eli - 13 February 1848
George Rufus - 15 August 1850

John's parents were early emigrants from Pennsylvania to Trumbull County, Ohio. John was probably born in Austin Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, but his parents had moved from Trumbull to Wayne County between 1810-1820.

Upon marriage he and Mary Magdalena remained in Ohio through 1850 and moved to Genesee County, Michigan, by 1860 where he was a farmer. Answering the Union call during the civil war he enlisted in Co. I, 10th Michigan Infantry, that was organized in Flint and mustered in as a unit 10 February 1862 for a three year enlistment. They were ordered to Corinth, Mississippi, April 22nd and were part of the Battle of Farmingon, Mississippi, 9 May 1862. John lasted a total of 4 months, dying 14 June 1862 in Good Samaritan Hospital, Saint Louis, of battle wounds from which he did not recover. He was buried the same day.

His children did well for themselves: farming, the professions and in business. His son George Rufus Shatto is among the best known Shattos, starting off as a dry-goods clerk, opening his own store in Port Huron, selling out and moving to Los Angeles where he piled up a fortune in real estate and other ventures including Catalina Island. The Shatto name is attached to many places in Los Angeles.
