Hattie was the fifth of eight known children in her family. She was the sister of George Rufus Shatto (memorial # 9770188) who came to California in the 1880's and became a real estate magnate and developer in Los Angeles.

Her father was a farmer who moved the family from Ohio to Genesee County prior to 1860, enlisted in Co. I, 10th Michigan Infantry and died in St. Louis of wounds in 1862.

Her husband, Elliott was a civil war veteran. He was a railroad agent in 1880 and by 1900 he and Hattie moved to Highland Township, San Bernardino County, where they established themselves as orange growers.

After the death of her husband, Hattie continued as an orchardist. She left a sizeable estate valued about $80,000+ that she left to her nieces and nephews.

She died at Ramona Hospital, San Bernardino, after a six weeks stay for a broken hip.
