Mary was the fourth known child in her family of 8 children. Her father had moved the family from Trumbull County where his parents had been one of the first Shatto families to come to Ohio from Pennsylvania before 1810.
The family ultimately moved to Michigan where her father enlisted in Union forces in the civil war, losing his life to battle wounds in 1862. Several of her siblings remained in Michigan while others made their way to southern California, including her well known brother, George Rufus Shatto, who became a real estate entrepreneur in Los Angeles and Catalina Island in the 1880's.
