Isaac was the first born of his parents and came with them from Trumbull County, Ohio, prior to 1860, growing up in a farm family. His father enlisted early in the civil war, lasted 4 months with his Michigan infantry unit, dying 14 June 1862 in St. Louis leaving the family without a husband and father.

Isaac enlisted in Battery A, 1st Michigan Light Artillery, mustered in 31 May 1861 in Detroit. He survived the war, was mustered out 31 May 1864 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, came home and continued a farm life. In 1892 he was living as a pensioner in Flint. His famous brother, George Rufus Shatto, had a business in Port Huron, but had left years before 1896 for Los Angeles to build his real estate empire.
