Mary was probably born in Medina, Trumbull County, Ohio, where the family was living in 1850. Mary came with her parents to Genessee County before 1860 where she met and married Solon Brackett.
Mary and husband Solon first resided with her parents. Her father enlisted in the 10th Michigan Infantry in the fall of 1861, was wounded in one of the unit's first engagements in the Western Campaign, evacuated to a St. Louis army hospital and died 14 June 1862.
Thereafter Mary and Solon lived close by her widowed mother and in 1880 had taken her into their household.
Mary lived most of her life as a farmer's wife, first in Venice Township, Shiawasee County.
