Obituaries
Ethel G. (Sprenkle) Brake, 101, of 531 Pratt Court, Waynesboro, died at 10:44 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, in her home. She was in failing health for the past two years and critically ill for the past week.
Born July 23, 1903, in Adams County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Jesse K. (Diehl) Sprenkle. She lived her early life in Blue Ridge Summit and Shady Grove.
Mrs. Brake attended schools in Monterey and Shady Grove.
She and her husband, Fred E. Brake, were married April 6, 1923, in Uniontown. They lived throughout the United States while Mr. Brake was in the military. He died Aug. 15, 1971. Mrs. Brake returned to Waynesboro in 1981 and moved to the present residence in 1999.
She worked in various jobs and locally she worked at Landis Machine Co. and Waynesboro Knitting Mill, both of Waynesboro.
Mrs. Brake was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.
She also was a member of AARP South Chapter 2977 and the national AARP.
Mrs. Brake enjoyed crocheting, working on crossword puzzles, playing bingo, cooking, baking, sewing and gardening.
She is survived by two daughters, Virginia M. Harrison of Sun City, Calif., and Bonnie G. Geesaman of Waynesboro, with whom she lived; two sons, John W. "Jack" Brake of Greenville, Va., and Richard G. "Dick" Brake of Martinez, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was the last of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Daisy Kipe, Romona Martin, Ruth Peiffer, Virginia Brawner and Beulah Chesan and five brothers, Omar Sprenkle, Lester Sprenkle, Lloyd Sprenkle, Jesse Sprenkle and Herman Sprenkle.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
