HERMAN A. SPRANKLE, 70, formerly of 544 W. Eighth St., died unexpectedly at 11 a.m. Saturday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Doris Helman, 327 Commerce St., where he had been living for the past year. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
Sprankle was born near Fountaindale on Sept. 4, 1911, son of the late Samuel and Jessie (Diehl) Sprankle. Most of his life was lived in the Waynesboro area.
As a young man, he was employed in farm work. He later worked at Frick Co., the Waynesboro Shoe Factory and the Gettysburg Shoe Factory. Prior to his retirement in 1974, Sprankle was self-employed as a drayman for 15 years.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater.
His wife, Mrs. Carrie A. (Bender) Sprankle, died in July, 1978. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the VFW.
He is survived by six children: Mrs. Doris Helman, Charles E. Sprankle, Chester Sprankle and Robert R. Sprankle, all of Waynesboro; Gordon Sprankle, Guys Mills, Pa.; and Mrs. Shirley Hettenschuller, Mentzer Gap Road. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and these sisters and brothers: Mrs. Ramona Martin, Mrs. Ruth Peiffer and Mrs. Ethel Brake, all of Waynesboro; Omar Sprankle, Iron Bridge Road; Lester Sprankle, Fayetteville R.D. 2; Mrs. Virginia Brauner, Hollywood, Fla.; and Mrs. Beulah Chesin, North Miami, Fla.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Howard Smith. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
