Glen was born May 22, 1917 in Shelby County, Illinois, the second son of Jesse James and Eva Ellen (Clayton) Abbott. He married Lula Ellen Gullion February 5, 1939 at Terre Haute, Indiana, she preceded him in death. He later married Dorthea Dixon December 24, 1977, at Robinson, Illinois, she survives. Also surviving are his children, Roger Abbott and wife Lois, Robert Abbott and wife Mary, Albert Abbott and wife Carol, Clark Abbott and wife Jeanette, Merlyn Abbott and special friend Brenda Dyer and Glenda Webster and husband Mike all of Mattoon, and Eva Closson and husband Rex of Ealsey, South Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Abbott of Mattoon. He also leaves a step-son, Fred Bennett of Harristown; step-daughters, LaVonn Rogers of St. Joseph and Debra Humphreys of Mattoon. Also surviving are a brother, Ted Abbott and wife Jean of Bethany; half-brothers, Van Abbott and wife Patty, Jesse James Abbott, Jr. all of Mattoon, Doyle Abbott and wife Donna of Jewett and Paul Abbott and wife Cindy of Toledo; sisters, Beatrice Winchester of Allenville and Norma Sheets of Sullivan; half sisters, Lois Pugh of Mattoon and Leta Davis and husband Kenny of Sullivan; a sister-in-law, Naida Abbott of Peru, Illinois; twenty five grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, one son, William Abbott, two grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters and one half brother.
Glen was a member of Mattoon Christian Church, member and past master of Neoga Lodge #279 AF & AM, Musicians Local 224, Fiddlers Association, was a 32nd degree Mason and a former pilot. Glen will be remembered as a musician playing the fiddle, bass guitar, mandolin and keyboard with bands throughout Central Illinois. He most recently played at the Lions Club and Senior Centers in Shelbyville and Findlay, receiving his last standing ovation at the Senior Center May 4, 2007
Glen had been employed by the Illinois Central Railroad as a track inspector and foreman for 28 years, retiring in 1975. He lived in Sullivan for a few years where he owned and operated a bicycle shop. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Glen enjoyed his family very much. One of his highlights was a surprise party at Peterson Park to celebrate his 90th birthday.
