Van Daryl Abbott, age 68, of Mattoon passed away at 5:17 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital with his loving wife by his side. Funeral services for family and friends will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2016 at Schilling Funeral Home. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Schilling Funeral Home. Van was born on August 11, 1948 in Decatur, IL the eldest son of Jesse James and Veta (Maxedon) Abbott. He married Patricia Ann Cowger on June 19, 2005 in Mattoon. Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia Abbott of Mattoon, IL; brothers, Doyle D. (Jackie) Abbott of Kansas, IL, James RustyAbbott of Mattoon, IL and Paul (Lisa) Abbott of Neoga, IL; sisters, Lois Pugh of Mattoon, IL, Norma Sheets of Sullivan, IL and Leta (Kenny) Davis of Sullivan, IL; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Jackie Mallernee. He was lovingly known as paw paw by Harley and will be greatly missed. Van was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Noble (Gene) Abbott, Jesse Jr. Abbott, Glen Abbott, Ted Abbott, Ivan Abbott and Donald Abbott; and sisters, Beatrice Winchester, Marge Moran and O. Bernice Moran. Van proudly served in the United States Army during Vietnam. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Toledo, IL. Van worked at ARC in T-Town, IL and was a Groundskeeper. He loved dancing, camping, playing Bingo, baseball and bowling in the Mattoon League. Van was an avid Cardinal fan. He was a member of the Moose Club and a former member of the Eagles Club and V.F.W. of Sullivan. Most of all, Van enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Memorial donations in his honor are suggested to the family.
