J. Frank Catchings was born in May 1871, most likely in Bastrop Co, TX to Andrew J. Catchings and Elizabeth Pearson Catchings. He was the next to the youngest of 5 children. The family farmed in the Red Rock area of Bastrop County.

February 16, 1908, Frank Catchings died of pneumonia at age 36 at his home in Red Rock, TX. His widow was left at age 33 to rear their children with the help of her father and brothers. Frank is buried in the Old Red Rock Cemetery along with his wife, Lou, and other family members.
