David C. Catchings was born in the Red Rock area of Bastrop County, Texas in 1868 to Andrew J. Catchings and Elizabeth Pearson Catchings. In 1898, at the age of 29, he wed Julia Fellers in Bastrop County. Two children were born to this marriage--Andrew Washington Catchings (b. 1900) and Annie L. Catchings (b. 1904) The marriage failed to last and by 1910 Julie was already divorced from her second husband. The children, while born as Catchings, eventually went by the surname of "Katching".

In 1901, David Catchings was convicted of cattle theft and sentenced to two years in the Texas correctional facilities in Walker County. In 1903 Governor Joseph D. Sayers pardoned David of his crime. (Gov. Sayers was also a Bastrop Co. native.) In 1905, at the age of 37, David Catchings died of tuberculosis. He is buried next to other Catchings family members.
