Mary was the oldest of the 12 surviving children of Andrew Carmichael from Lislea, Co Derry, Northern Ireland, and Isabella Johnstone from Dumfries-shire, Scotland.

She was the first to leave home, marrying neighbouring farmer Elias Lawrence so my father never got to see his Aunt Mary as often as his other aunts and uncles.

The couple had 10 children of their own. Sadly James Henry died of epilepsy, Andrew in a dynamite explosion and the youngest John when a gate fell on him.

Mary is in the centre of the bottom photo with her surviving siblings, all gathered for the 1924 funeral of their mother. Both Mary and Elias were long lived, until 78 and 80 respectively.
