Samuel Victor Carmichael was the youngest of 13 born to Major Andrew Carmichael from County Derry, Northern Ireland, and Isabella Johnstone from Dumfries-shire, Scotland. Vic was named for his uncle who practiced as a Blacksmith in Renfrew, Ontario.

After obtaining his medical degree, Vic established a general practice in Strome, Alberta, where he spent his entire career.

Vic was a great athlete and runner. A local history recalls that after being invited to a pow-wow about 1920 "Dr. Carmichael [age 38] raced a 70 year-old Indian named Steinhaurer down Main Street. The native Indian won hands down!"

He paid off the mortgage of the Strome (Alberta) United Church and a plaque recognizing his generosity to the church resides there.

The doctor died on his way to make a house call. He had forgotten his nitro glycerin tablets and could not get back to the house in time.
