In the 1870s John's father and grandfather built the family home which still stands across the road from St. Andrew's Presbyterian in Spencerville, Ontario.
About 1900 John and his wife, Lydia Maria Bennett, moved to Strathcona, Alberta, with four of their seven children. In Spencerville John had been the village blacksmith as his father and grandfather before him. He retired in Edmonton as a customs officer.
