Sailed from Lislea, County Derry, Ireland in 1847 at the age of 10 with his parents and three siblings to join his Uncle James in Spencerville.

Although his own parents could only sign with an "X," Andrew and his Scottish wife Isabella Johnstone sent most of their 11 sons to Queens College, graduating two doctors, a lawyer and a clergyman.

During the 1870s Andrew and his father, John, built the family home of stone which still stands opposite this church. "Carmichael House" was featured in an 1878 issue of the Canadian Illustrated News.

In the 1880s Andrew was Deputy Reeve, township clerk, postmaster, elder in the Presbyterian Church and a militia captain. He had the most profitable blacksmith shop in the area and operated a general store from the family home.

He took part in the 1870 Finian Raid and later helped organise the Lisgar Rifles of the 56th Grenville Batallion, first as Captain then as Major.
