Robert McKenzie Mitchell was the seventh of eleven children born to Russell C. Mitchell, Sr. (1837-1905), a Confederate veteran and prominent Atlanta businessman, and his first wife Deborah Margaret Sweet (1847-1887). Robert married Lottie Ball around 1905, and they had two children, Crawford S. Mitchell (21 June 1906-9 March 1989) and Lilly May Mitchell (c. 1908). Robert was an uncle of Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone with the Wind."
