Gordon Forrest Mitchell was the fifth of eleven children born to Russell C. Mitchell, Sr. (1837-1905), a Confederate veteran and prominent Atlanta businessman, and his first wife Deborah Margaret Sweet (1847-1887). He was named for two famous Confederate generals, J. B. Gordon and N. B. Forrest. He was an attorney, in practice with his brother Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) for a time. He married Isabel Ormond Thomas on 8 Nov. 1892. He was an uncle of Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone with the Wind."
