Gospero Sweet Mitchell was the second of eleven children born to Russell C. Mitchell, Sr. (1837-1905), a Confederate veteran and prominent Atlanta businessman, and his first wife Deborah Margaret Sweet (1847-1887). He was named for his mother's grandfather, Rev. Gospero Sweet (1771-1856), a Methodist miniter and planter of Gadsden County, Florida.

The younger Gospero only lived 20 years. He was an uncle of Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone with the Wind."
