Irene Caroline Mitchell was the youngest of eleven children born to Russell C. Mitchell, Sr. (1837-1905), a Confederate veteran and prominent Atlanta businessman, and his first wife Deborah Margaret Sweet (1847-1887). She was an aunt of Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone with the Wind."

From "The Atlanta Constitution," Oct. 1908:

"The friends of Miss Irene Caroline Mitchell, Mrs. Russell C. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Willis M. Timmons, Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Mitchell, Misses Jessie, Clara and Lillian Mitchell, Mr. Gordon F. Mitchell, Mr. Russell C. Mitchell, Jr., and Mr. Arthur Neal Robinson are invited to attend the funeral of Miss Irene Caroline Mitchell, Friday, October 23, 1908, at 9:30 a.m. from the residence, 343 N. Boulevard. Interment Oakland. The following named gentlemen will please act as pallbearers and meet at the office of H. M. Patterson & Son at 9 a.m.: Mr. Howard W. Smith, Mr. Cone M. Maddox, Mr. Harvey W. Orr, Mr. W. Brown Hayes, Mr. Robert S. Hayes, Mr. W. Harry Snelling."
