Earnest was the son of Samuel Porch Craver and Cyntha Jane Carpenter. He married Clara Arthelia Messer in Putnam County, Missouri, on August 22, 1899. After their marriage Earnest and Clara lived in Putnam County, Missouri. They later moved to Appanoose County, Iowa, living in Centerville and later in Caldwell, Pleasant and Vermillion Townships, where Earnest made a living as a farmer and coal miner, including the Big Tom Coal Mine at Cincinnati, Iowa. In 1942 Earnest and Clara moved to Exline, Iowa and retired. He was elected Mayor there in 1947 and also served on the city council.
