A veteran of the Civil War John W. Craver, a resident of Montezuma, Iowa, enlisted as a private, at age 22, on August 9, 1862. He was mustered into Company C, 28th Iowa Infantry on September 22, 1862. He died of disease on February 21, 1863 at Helena, Arkansas. There are no records of where he is buried.

All soldiers who died at Helena were initially buried at Helena. They were then moved to Memphis National Cemetery about 1867. Many headboards often written in pencil were no longer legible or vandalized by then. These soldiers were marked unknown in Memphis National Cemetery.
