OBITUARY: THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - Thursday, September 28, 1989

THOMAS ARCHIE SMITH of Hill Spring and Cardston, passed away quietly in the Cardston Auxiliary Hospital on Tuesday, September 26, 1989 at the age of 95 years.

Archie was born in Idaho in 1894 to William Charles & Mary Eleanor Smith, the seventh of nine children. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers & sisters, and two infant sons - Dale & Archie.

William Charles moved his family to the ranching area of Mountain View in the early'1900's. Archie attended school there and when he had completed his grade school he went to the L.D.S, Church College in Sail Lake City,-Utah. After a year he was needed at home on the ranch. When the war broke out he began to farm until a mission call came from the Church. He served in the Eastern Canadian Mission and returned to farming when his three year mission was completed in 1923.

Archie was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served several missions - one with his wife Myrtle (Wood). He enjoyed the scriptures and read the Church periodicals and other Church books a I every opportunity. When his eyesight began to fail, Myrtle or a family member would read to him. He never lost the missionary spirit.

He loved animals, especially good, well-bred horses. He took pride in riding a good horse and brought some good stock to the area.

Archie leaves to mourn his wife -Myrtle, at the Grandview Nursing Home in Cardston, three sons - Bryan of Hill Spring, LaMont (Monty) of Spanish Fork, Utah and, Carlos of Provo, Utah; two daughters - Mary Ann (Nan) Olsen of Cardston & Shirley Pugmire of Midvale, Utah; 21 grandchildren & many great grand children. He was an example of faith, patience an endurance.
The Funeral Service will be held in the Hill Spring L.D.S. Chapel on Friday, September 29th at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Myron Peterson Officiating. Friends may meet the family at the church from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment in the Hill Spring Cemetery. SALMON FUNERAL HOME, CARDSTON, Assisting The Family. 653-3844.
