From Holland St. John - "Winfield Scott (family members called him by his middle name Scott) St John was born in Rock County, Wisconsin on February 11, 1852. In October of the same year, his parents Nehemiah and Elmena St John and family moved to Clayton County, Iowa. He spent his youth around Brush Creek (later called Arlington) on his father's farm. On April 29, 1876, when he was twenty-four years of age, he married Marion Minerva Phillips. Shortly after their marriage, Scott and his young bride went to Nebraska where Marion's cousin Mary lived and spent the summer there. That winter they returned to his father's farm in Iowa to stay while Marion taught at the St John school. By this time they had four children who went to school in Arlington: Ruth, Naomi, Monroe and Freeman. Scott held several jobs including working on the railroad, running a meat market, and selling Singer sewing machines. Two more children were added to the family at this time: James Irving and Lewis Holland. The family moved again, this time to West Union, just a few miles from Arlington. Their youngest son Stuart was born here in 1892. In 1901 his daughter Naomi and son Monroe journeyed to Washington State where Scott's brother Freem had secured jobs for them. That winter Scott decided he too would go West to establish a new home for the family. In April of 1903 the remaining family in Iowa joined Scott and settled in Snohomish, just north of Seattle. After a number of years, they farmed in Eastern Washington and in 1922 they joined their daughter Naomi in Richmond Beach where he lived until he had a stroke and died on October 9, 1940."
