"Dan" St John was the son of Nehemiah and Elmena (Freeman) St John and was born near Porter, Wisconsin on the family farm on November 8, 1843. He went with his parents to Clayton County, Iowa when he was about eight years old in 1852. He lived on the family farm near Arlington and attended school with other members of his family and children of other farmers living in the area. Dan married (1) Estella Westcott near Redfield, Iowa on November 8, 1871. She was the daughter of William Westcott. They were divorced in 1873. He married (2) Emma Elizabeth Aldridge in Sperry Township, Posey County, Iowa on March 7, 1879. The couple had one child: Myron Ray who was born March 19, 1880. That marriage ended in divorce in 1883. His third marriage was to Mrs. Syrena May (Darr) Ensign on February 18, 1889 at Brush Creek, Iowa (near Arlington). She was the daughter of Maria Jean Wade (Guin)Darr and George Darr. May had been a widow for five years at the time she married Dan and was raising four boys at the time. The family moved to McCracken in Ness County, Kansas where he continued to farm. They became the parents of six children: Leona, May, Frank, Mabel, Eva and Eleanor. In 1908 Dan and his family moved to Snohomish, Washington where they settled on a farm a few miles north of town. His farm was mainly a dairy farm. Dan passed away at Snohomish on May 19, 1929 and his wife May died on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1932.
