From Holland St. John "Frank St John was born November 23, 1849 near Porter, Wisconsin on the family homestead. He came to Clayton County, Iowa when he was three years old. He was one of nine children whose parents were Nehemiah and Elmena (Freeman) St John. In 1852 his parents established a farm at the edge of the Clayton-Fayette county line near the town of Arlington. This was his home for nearly eighty years. Frank St John and Marion Ensign were united in marriage at Strawberry Point by the Reverend Stearns on December 3, 1876. He was a farmer and lived on one farm 78 years, all but three years of his life. Frank and Marion had two children: Seth Raymond, who was born the summer of 1878 and lived only one week; and Milton Ensign, who was born July 2, 1892. After a short illness, Frank passed away December 30, 1930 at his home. Interment took place at the Taylorsville cemetery at Arlington. His obituary read: "The passing of our mutual friend and neighbor, Frank St John, has brought sorrow to the hearts of hosts of friends. His residence on one farm the past 78 years more than three quarters of a century is an unusual record. His good deeds along a path of more than 80 years, whose trial began in a pioneer day and of which 54 and 27 days were traveled with his devoted wife, has formed friendships and ties that are heart rendering to break."
