Biography

The year of the birth is listed as "1783" in the book "The Balliet, Balliett, Balliette, Balyeat and Bolyard and Allied Families", by Stephen Clay Balliet, which is incorrect.

Abraham Balliet, son of Jacob, was listed as 17 yrs old and confirmed on January 19, 1807. There was no baptism record at the church. (See Reformed and Lutheran Congregation [formerly Dryland Church], Nazareth Township, Northampton County, Hecktown, PA, transcribed by William J. Hinke, page 206, LDS film # 20351).

Mathias Miller and Jacob Young, administrators of the estate of John Billhimer, blacksmith, deceased, late of Moore Township, Northampton County, PA, sold 41 acres and 54 perches in Moore Township to Abraham Balliet, blacksmith, of the same place (no wife listed) for $521 on February 11, 1828. Deed recorded February 12, 1828.

Abraham Balliet, blacksmith, and his wife Elizabeth, of Moore Township, Northampton County, PA sold 41 acres in Moore Township to Andrew Craver of the same place, for $1,285 on April 3, 1837. Deed recorded March 15, 1843.

Abraham Balliet was listed in the 1850 and 1860 census living in Moore Township, Northampton County, PA. In 1850, Abraham Balliet, 49, was listed as a blacksmith. His wife, Elizabeth, 48, daughter, Henryetta, 21 and Wm. Hoffman, 21, blacksmith, were also listed in the 1850 census. He was listed as 70 years of age living with his son, Reuben, 44, in 1860, but no wife was listed. There was no listing for him in the 1870 census.

The census record for 1860 places his birth about 1790, which is consistent with the information noted above.

Abraham Balliett of Moores Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and heir of Jacob Balliet, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and Barbara Balliet, Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, was paid $165 by John Dentler on June 23, 1856. Deed recorded April 14, 1858.

Abraham Balliet, blacksmith, (no wife listed) of Moore Township, Northampton County, PA sold 7 acres in Moore Township to Benjamin Fehnel of the same place, for $1,050 on March 16, 1860. Deed recorded April 6, 1896. This being the same tract that David Klechner and Mary, his wife, sold to Abraham Balliet on January 14, 1837, but was never recorded.

According to Will Book - file # 7586, letters of adminstration were granted on February 2, 1864 to Samuel Balliet, administrator of the estate of Abraham Balliet, late of Morre Township. On March 4, 1864, Abraham's personal property was sold at auction at the home of Reuben Balliet. Sam Balliet, Charles Balliet and Reuben Balliet were listed purchasing many of the items of personal property.

Salem Union Church Cemetery, Moore Township, Northampton County, PA compiled by Floyd L. Roth in 1993, located at the Easton Public Library, Easton, PA (H929.3 PA N21 S 163R) lists 14 Balliet's including the following in this order -

Elizabeth, wife, (not listed ??)
Samuel (1815 - 1871)
Juliann (1821 - 1862
Reuben (1818 - 1900)
Catharine (1824 - 1916)
Charles (1825 - 1878)

Veterans burial card reportedly lists date of birth as November 27, 1790 and date of death as November 12, 1865. Served as a Private in July to December of 1814 in Capt. John Sheffer's Northampton County Militia.
