Biography

Variations in spelling of family name – Balliett, Balliet, Balgert, Bolgert, Baljet, Baljot, Balyard, Bolyard.

Jacob Bolgert (Balliet) and Barbara Ritterin (Ritter) were married on November 6, 1781 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Easton, Northampton County, PA.

Barbara Ritter was a sister of Anna Maria Ritter, Jacob's first wife.

The wills of Casper Ritter (April 2, 1792) and his wife, Anna Maria Ritter (January 30, 1803) of Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, PA, mention their first daughter was the wife of Jacob Balliet and two grandchildren -- Barbara and Susanna Balliet. Both wills are in German.

Jacob Balliet was a Captain in the Northampton County militia during the Revolutionary War.

Christopher Kocher and Juliana, his wife, of Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, PA sold 40 acres in Bethlehem Township to Jacob Balliet, blacksmith, of the same place (no wife listed) for 240 pounds on February 28, 1784. Deed recorded September 5, 1785.

Jacob Balliet, blacksmith, and Barbara, his wife, of Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, PA, mortgaged 40 acres in Bethlehem Township for 100 pounds on April 3, 1787. The mortgage to be paid 50 pounds plus interest each April 3rd. Deed recorded July 3, 1787

George Neyhart and Susanna, his wife, of Nazareth Township, Northampton County, PA sold 30 acres in Nazareth Township to Jacob Balliet of the same place (no wife listed), for 400 pounds on November 15, 1803. Deed recorded November 15, 1803. This land was next to other lands already owned by Jacob Balliet and Caspar Ritter.

Only three children (Jacob, Catharine and Hannah) are listed in the baptism records and three children (Jacob, Joseph and Abraham) are listed in the confirmation records of Dryland Church, Nazareth Township, Northampton County, PA, transcribed by William J. Hinke in 1929. (LDS film # 20351).

Dryland Church records (1808 - 1907) transcribed by Clarence E. Beckel in 1938, located at the Easton Public Library, Easton, Pennsylvania, list the following children of Jacob Balliet (no wife listed) in the confirmation records:

Jacob Balliet, and Barbara, his wife, of Lower Nazareth Township, Northampton County, PA, sold 70 acres in Lower Nazareth to their son, Daniel Balliet, of the same place for $5,250 on October 13, 1828. Recorded November 1, 1828.

After the death of Jacob Balliet in 1831, his wife Elizabeth, lived with her son Daniel, until Daniel sold the 40 acre farm and moved with his mother, Elizabeth, to Delaware Township, Northumberland County, PA in 1841.

Barbara Balliet filed for a pension and bounty land warrant after Jacob Balliet's death. There are several affidavits from family members and neighbors, which discuss the family history, the family name (in German - pronounced / spelled Balyard, Bolyard, Bolgert) and the family's move from Northampton County to Northumberland County. One letter in particular dated July 10, 1856, mentions Elizabeth Balliet, 90 years old and the daughter (not named in letter, but probably Rebecca) who has devoted her whole life to the comfort and health of her mother. At the death of Elizabeth Barbara Balliet in 1857, the Northumberland County Orphan Court Dockets and Deeds filed to settle her estate list all the children and their respective marriages except there is no mention of her two step daughters -- Maria, Susanna or her daughter -- Catherine.

Inscription

There is conflicting information regarding the death of Jacob Balliet --

"Jacob Balliet, son of Joeseph & Barbara, born July 1, 1751 and died September 6, 1831" is listed in the Dryland Union Church Cemetery inscriptions by Maria Von Steuben in 1920 (See LDS film # 1029736, Item # 8).

Jacob Balliet, aged 80 years, 4 months and 0 days was buried on November 6, 1831 at the old Dryland Reformed Church Cemetery according to the book "The Forks of the Delaware", by Rev. Henry Martyn Keiffer, page 328, published in 1902, Easton, PA. This particular book is a transcription from German of the church record books of the First Reformed Church of Easton, Pennsylvania (1760 - 1852). There is no listing for Jacob Balliet at the Dryland Cemetery, but there is mention that inscriptions of the older stones are quite illegible according to the book "The Old Graveyards of Northampton and Adjacent Counties in Pennsylvania" by John Eyerman published in 1899-1901, The book is located at the Easton Public Library, Easton, PA.

The old grave markers of the cemetery were removed in 1975 due to the poor conditions of the markers and safety issues. A large memorial was constructed in place of the old markers.
