Matilda Ann Lee was born Dec. 23, 1825 on a farm northeast of Greenfield, Ill. now known as the T.E. Melvin farm, and grew to womanhood in Greene County, Illinois. Matilda married J. William VanMatre on 20 Apr. 1847 at Greenfield, Greene Co. IL. Four children were born to their union, Mary V., who died in infancy, Etna, wife of M. H. Wilson, of this place, Isaac J. who has not been heard of for years and Martha V., wife of Rev. J. W. Teaney of Otterville, Ill. The husband died in 1855. In 1859 she was married to J. M. Grizzle to whom were born three children, G. E. now a resident of Chesterfield, J. L. of Colfax, Wash, and Luella, wife of I. A. Woolley of Chesterfield Her husband died in March, 1889. She has been a sufferer with heart trouble for the past five months and died at the home of her son, G. E. at Chesterfield September 14, 1904, aged seventy eight years, eight months and twenty-two days. Her body was brought back near her old home and interred in the Rives Cemetery. (Her body was later moved to Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield, IL.)
