In the death of Mr. William M. Lee, another of the early settlers of Madison county has passed away. The death of the venerable gentleman occurred at the family home on the St. Louis road, near Peters on Monday morning 12th inst. at 7:30 o'clock, in his 82nd year. Up to within a short time of the end he had been enjoying good health for one of his years, his last illness being of about week's duration. Deceased was born in Greene county, this state, June 12, 1827, and was the son of Archibald and Jane (Upton) Lee, who came to Illinois in 1824 from the south, the father's death occurring in Green county at the age of 78 years. Deceased was reared on the home farm and remained with his parents until of age, when he came to this county and rented and operated a farm. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Nix in September 1851, a daughter of Ambers and Sally Nix, and a native of this county, who preceded him to the grave. Soon after his marriage deceased purchased 68 acres of land, which forms a portion of his present tract of 184 acres. He has always been an enterprising and highly esteemed resident of this township, a hard worker, and showed a disposition to improve his opportunities. He was numbered as one of the early settlers of the county and has witnessed its growth and development, always being ready to contribute his share in the work of public improvements.
