MRS. SAMUEL VAN NICE
With deep regret, the Herald-Patriot this week notes the death of one of Lucas county's best known pioneer ladies, Mrs. Samuel Van Nice, which occured on August 11th, 1916, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 2 days.
While she had been in ill health for some time, death came very unexpectedly and was a great shock to the relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. P. A. Tinkham, after which interment was made in the Russell cemetery.
Mary Allen was born on September 9th, 1835. On September 5th, 1855, she was united in marriage to Samuel Van Nice, who survives her. Seven children are also living. They are Frank A., Thomas F., Lester R., and Mrs. Emma Littleton, of Russell; Mrs. Hattie Sells, of Sidney; Mrs. Florence Pedigo, of Lucas; Henry Albert, of Largo, Florida, all of whom, except the last named, were present at the funeral services. Two children Lillie and Mary, died in infancy.
Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Van Nice came to Lucas county, Iowa, and located on a farm in Cedar township, where they resided until 1894, when they moved to Russell and that place has since been their home.
When she was about sixteen years of age deceased united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church in Indiana, and after their removal to Russell, she and her husband placed their membership with the Presbyterian church under the pastorate of Rev. Hall.
Mrs. Van Nice was beloved by all who knew her and during her long residence in this county won the admiration of all with whom she came in contact. A grand, noble woman has gone to her reward. In their great loss, the sorrowing husband, children, nine grandchildren, two brothers and one sister who survive, will have the sympathy of the entire community.
