TOM VAN NICE RITES SUNDAY
Thomas Fyfe Van Nice, second son of Samuel and Mary Allen Van Nice, was born near the pioneer village of LaGrange, Iowa on July 9, 1859, and died at his home in Russell on August 20, 1936, after an illness of only three days.
On April 23, 1888, he was united in marriage to Mary Eva Hardy of Monroe county, and they lived to celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary over a year ago.
Two daughters and two sons were born to this union, Mrs. Margaret Riley of Chariton, Mrs. Gertrude Boyd of Russell, Melvin Getts of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Orin Lee, who died Nov. 16, 1927.
Besides the children and his faithful wife, he leaves to mourn their loss, eleven grandchildren, and two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Hattie Sells and Mrs. Florence Pedigo of Norwood, Henry Albert Van Nice of St. Petersburg, Florida and Lester R. Van Nice of Russell.
His entire life was spent in Lucas county as a farmer, but in 1924, because of the loss of his eyesight, he moved to Russell, being no longer able to carry on farm work.
In early life he bacame a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and he never relinquished that faith. He was a good man, a good husband and father. Genial and generous to a fault, even though a shut-in for so many years. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances.
Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church Sunday, August 23, at 11 o'clock a.m. Interment took place in the Russell cemetery.
