TANDY ALLEN PASSES AWAY

With heartfelt sorrow we note the passing away of one of Lucas county's oldest and best known residents, Mr. Tandy Allen, of Russell, which occured last Friday at his home in that city after an extended illness with the infirmities of old age. About seventy years of his life had been spent in this county, and he had a wide acquaintance and was esteemed by all for his many sterling attributes.

The last sad rites were held at the Presbyterian church in Russell on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, and were conducted by Rev. Peter Bok, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. W. L. Cain of Creston. A large concourse of relatives and friends assembled at that time to pay their last tribute of respect to this good man, and the many floral tributes were mute testimony to the regard in which he was held, as well as sympathy for the bereaved ones. At the conclusion of the services the remains were laid to rest in the Russell cemetery.

Tandy Allen, son of Robert and Mary Alison Allen, was born near Mt. Sterling, Montgomery county, Ky., on June 3, 1832, and departed this life at the family home in Russell, June 24, 1922, having attained the ripe age of ninety years and twenty-one days. He was the seventh of eleven children, only one of whom, Mrs. Margaret McKee, of Russell, survives him.

At the age of six years he was taken to Putnam county, Ind., where they made their home on a farm near Greencastle during his boyhood. In 1852 he came on horseback with two cousins to Lucas county, Iowa and "entered" the land that formed the nucleus of the farm on which he spent most of his life.

Four years later he returned to Indiana and at New Winchester was married to Joanna S. Van Nice on January 29, 1856, and for more than 66 years he shared the joys and sorrows of wedded life with this faithful companion, who is still living in the home at Russell, to which they removed from the farm in 1900.

Twelve children were born to this union, eleven of whom are living and were privileged to visit him in the last days of his illness and to be present at the funeral, the twelfth, Eliza M. Cassity, having preceded him in death on January 1, 1897. Thirty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were a source of pride and comfort to him in the declining days.

He was one of the first trustees and a generous contributor to the Presbyterian church at LaGrange, one of the first churches organized in Lucas county, of which he was a member.
