JOANNA VAN NICE ALLEN

Joanna Smith Van Nice was born near Danville, Indiana, February 28, 1835 and departed this life at her home in Russell, Iowa, December 13, 1923, in her eighty-ninth year.

She was the daughter of Peter C. and Sarah A. Van Nice and was of a long line of pioneer stock, her ancestors having come from Holland in 1651.

On January 29, 1856, near Danville, Indiana, she was united in marriage with Tandy Allen, of Putnam county. They came at once to Lucas county, Iowa, where the husband had already established a home in a log cabin. On this farm they spent more than forty years and here their family of six boys and six girls were born and reared.

In 1900 they moved to Russell where they spent the remainder of their days. Mr. Allen preceded her to the Great Beyond in June 1922. One daughter, Mrs. Eliza Cassity, died in 1897. The other children survive her and were with her during her last hours. Their names are: Miss Carrie E. Allen of Chicago; Mrs. S. T. Goltry; Mrs. W. J. Prather; Mrs. George Johnson; Aylmer and Clay Allen, all of Russell; Senator Chas. Allen of Cozad, Neb.; Fred of Tobias, Neb.; H. S. Allen of Chariton; Mrs. Gertrude Wortman of Malvern, Iowa; and Dr. Lloyd Allen of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Under the influence of a Christian home, she early in life united with the Presbyterian church, and for three quarters of a century she lived a life of devotion to church and home. Her life's work is ended, she leaves a revered memory as a perpetual inheritance to her loved ones remaining.

Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. Charley Allen, of Cozad, Neb.; Fred H. Allen, of Tobias, Neb.; Dr. Lloyd R. Allen, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Wortman, of Malvern; Carrie E. Allen, of Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cassity, of Des Moines; Boyd Allen, of Des Moines; Tandy Allen, of Indianola; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Goltry, of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Osa Loynachan, of Purdy.
