MRS. W. J. PRATHER

Sarah Adelaide Allen, daughter of Tandy and Joanna Van Nice Allen, was born in Cedar township, Lucas county, Iowa, on March 17, 1860, and passed away there Dec. 1, 1941, in her 82nd year.

On March 7, 1882, she was married to William J. Prather, who preceded her in death in February, 1932, just as they neared their 50th wedding anniversary.

Three children blessed this union, the eldest of whom, Bruce Orval, died at the age of eleven years.

There remain to mourn her departure two daughters, Mrs. O. C. Loynachan, of this county, and Mrs. O. L. Gilbert, of Tucson, Arizona, besides five grandchildren, Neva, Alvin, Fred, Walter and Worth Loynachan; seven of her eleven brothers and sisters also survive her.

Her earliest school days were spent in the first log school house built in her community. Later, she taught a few years there and at Humeston, Iowa. She was baptized in the Presbyterian faith and in her girlhood she united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at LaGrange, afterwards transferring her membership to the First Presbyterian church in Russell.

She lived a consistent christian life, devoted to the needs of her home and family, but her activities were not limited to these, for she possessed, in an unusual degree, the waning virtue in these days of patriotism and in her unassuming way she made her influence felt for good.

One of Cedar township's pioneers, hers was a long and useful life which is now a beautiful memory, cherished by her family and friends.

Funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Thompson, were held at the Russell Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, and burial was in the Russell cemetery.
