The third tragic auto accident within little more than a week on Alexandria city streets occurred Monday night when Eugene A. Anderson, aged 30 years, was struck at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth avenue by a car driven by Perle Vickerman and fatally injured. Mr. Anderson lived on Lake Ida, nine miles north of Alexandria and was the father of three small children.
The injured man was taken at once to St. Luke's Hospital, where it was thought that a broken leg was his only injury but it developed later that he had been internally injured, and he died about one o'clock on Wednesday morning.
Mr. Vickerman and Leonard Peterson were driving north on Broadway at about 9:30 o'clock Monday evening. The car was traveling at about 25 miles per hour. Mr. Anderson was crossing the intersection on foot. Mr. Vickerman stated after the accident that a car was approaching from the south with bright headlights and he did not see the man in the path of his car, and did not know that he had hit him. He felt a bump, but thought he had struck the stop signal set in the pavement at the intersection. Mr. Peterson, who was riding with him, told Mr. Vickerman that he had struck someone and the car was stopped as soon as possible. A coroner's inquest is being held today.
Eugene Anderson leaves a wife, formerly HIlda Affeldt, and three children, the youngest only three weeks old.
