William H Walker, well-known groceryman of the Fayetteville community, died last night at 7:45 o'clock at his home on the Raleigh Road after a prolonged illness.
He was born in Columbus County October 25, 1901, a son of Joel C Walker and Mrs Carrie V Walker. He came to Fayetteville from Wilmington where he was in the retail grocery business and for the past ten years had operated the W.H. Walker Cash Grocery.
The deceased was a member of the Cedar Falls Baptist Church and president of the Men's Bible Class. He was a fourteen-degree Mason and a member of Oriental Lodge 395 AF & AM and a member of the Wilmington Consistory.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs Kate Walker; by two step-daughters, Mrs Harry Gilliard of Wimington and Mrs Sanford G Rackley of Fayetteville; by four brothers, CM Walker of Fayetteville, Mack C Walker of High Point, J Teed Walker of Burlington and Rufus Walker of Lexington; by eight sisters, Mrs Bertha Herring of Wilmington, Mrs Lydia Jolly of Roanoke Rapids, Mrs Emma Glosson, Mrs Leila Hudson of Rockingham, Mrs Victoria Adams of Graham, Mrs Dosher McNeil of Wilmington, Mrs Ruth McNeil of Norfolk and Mrs Pearl Jarrell of Norfolk; and by one adopted sister, Mrs Hattie Twiggs of Georgia.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the Cedar Falls Baptist Church by the Rev James Hewitt, pastor of that church assisted by the Rev Mr Rogers of the St Andrews M.E. Chapel, the Rev James Auman and the Rev Baxter Walker. The body will remain at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home until one o'clock when it will be taken to the church to lie in state until the hour of the funeral. Burial will be in LaFayette Memorial Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be nephews of Mr Walker.
