Catherine Ann Jones Markham

Catherine and her husband, his mother and his two brothers came to California in 1852 from Utah. They settled in Tehama County and raised their family there and are buried there. They have many descendants still living in that area.

The following is an excerpt from Catherine's history: Catherine Anne Jones, born 17 August 1826 in New York City, was the oldest child of William Jones and Elizabeth Hughes; she married Warren Markham 17 June 1845 according to records of the Mormon Church. The marriage probably occured in Nauvoo, Illinois, where Catherine's parents resided for about five years. The couple had at least 9 children and emigrated to California. Catherine Ann died 28 August 1895 at Stony Creek, Glenn County, California.

Warren Markham was born 30 July 1824 in New York state, the first child and son of Stephen Markham and Hannah Hogeboom. He died 20 August 1900 in Paskenta, Glenn County, California. Stephen Markham, a major figure in the early years of Mormon history, was one of the original Utah pioneers of 1847. He served as a private courier for Joseph Smith. Warren's mother (Stephen Markham's first wife, Hannah) shared in many of the trials of the early years of the church. Catherine and Warren were probably in Council Bluffs, Iowa as part of Stephen Markham's larger family as he assisted in the exodus from Nauvoo. In 1850, when Stephen Markham led his last wagon train across the plains, Catherine and Warren and their first 2 children, Hannah and Catherine, whose birthplaces were listed in the census as 'Nebraska'.

Church history states "Sometime after the arrival of the family in Utah Hannah left her husband and, together with her three sons (Warren, Whiting and David) went to California to the gold diggings. She and her sons became permanent residents of California....." One account suggests that Warren and Catherine left the larger Markham family when Stephen relocated to Spanish Fork in 1852. Conditions were primitive and crowded as the settlers, including Stephen's new wives, struggled to establish a new home. Catherine and Warren may have chosen to join the William Jones family as they moved northward from San Bernadino. The birthplaces and birthdates of Catherine and Warren Markham's children, as reported in the federal census, indicate that the family was in Nebraska from 1847 through 1849, in Utah by 1851, and in California by 1853. By 1860 the Markham family lived in American township, Sacramento County, California. Children listed in the census that year were Hannah, Catherine, Searcy, Frances, and J. W.. Warren Markham was a farmer with real estate valued at $1500 and belongings at $1000. All the children were attending school except Catherine and one year old J.W.

In 1870 the family resided in Paskenta Township, Tehama County, a more northern county in the California foothills, raising stock. They reported ther worth at $300. The census listed only the younger children, Eleanor, Francis M., John W., Sarah A., Warren W. and Minnie D., all born in California. Surrounding neighbors were cattlemen. By 1900 Warren, probably widowed, lived in Glenn County. Warren's grandfather, David Markham, had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
