James Compton was the son of Robert S. Compton (b. 1808, SC, d. 1880, Washington Co. TX) and Rebecca McCain Compton (b. 1819, AL, d. >1875 AL). James McCain Compton was the eldest of their 9 children, all born in Montgomery, AL
This headstone is a cenotaph beside his daughter, Alice Compton Smith.
James M. Compton first enlisted with the Confederate Army in 1861 in Montgomery AL at age 21. He was on an original roll of Co. I, 1st AL Int. Reg. known as "Wilcox True Blues". He re-enlisted with Co. B. 25th AL. Inf. in Pensacola, FL on Dec. 21, 1861.
