Emily J. Compton Curry was the wife of Dr. Berkley Perry Curry. Emily was his second wife and Dr. Curry was thirty years older than she. Emily J. Compton was the daughter of Robert S. Compton and Rebecca G. McCain Compton born in Montgomery, Montgomery County, AL. Her parent's were married in Montgomery, AL. in 1838 and would have nine children between 1839 and 1857. Emily was one of the five children that came to Washington County, Texas with her father Robert S. Compton in 1875, from Elmore County, AL. Emily was a school teacher in Elmore County Alabama, and was possibly employed to teach school in the local Washington Co. area. Shortly upon her arrival to Washington County, Emily married Dr. B. P. Curry and had seven stepchildren to care for, and then two of her own. Unfortunately, Emily became ill with pneumonia and passed away in 1880 at thirty-six years of age, leaving her little children, Dr. Curry and her stepchildren to mourn for their loss. Her father, R.S. Compton died before she, in the same year. They are buried at Oak Rest Cemetery along with two other family members. Her brothers and sisters lived nearby.
It is believed that Emily's mother, Rebecca G. McCain Compton passed away in Alabama before the Comptons moved to Washington Co. Texas. Emily's daughter, little Emily Juliet, passed away a year after her death, in 1881. Little Emily was only two. Emily's son, James M. Curry, born April 24, 1876, lived in Texas until Nov. 3, 1948, passing away in Montgomery, TX. James was married, but we do not know if he had children.
Oak Rest Cemetery remains a beautful place with overviews of the the lovely countryside. It was the cemetery for Prospect Presbyterian Church.

Inscription

"To soon this gentle flower has faded from the gaze of those that loved it best.
An angel mother bright and lovely,
Came to see her heavenly rest."
