Alice B. Compton was the daughter of Robert S. Compton and Rebecca McCain Compton. Alice came from Wetumpka, Elmore County, AL. in 1875 with two brothers, Henry Clay and George William, two sisters, Mary Compton Stewart and Emily J., one nephew, John C. Stewart, and her father, Robert S. Compton, to live in Gay Hill-Independence, Washington County Texas. Her father, Robert S., passed away May 31, 1880, and his interment was in the Oak Rest Cememtery, Wash. Co. It was said that her family depended on Alice, and she was devoted to them. She never married. After the death of her brother's wife, Carry W. Compton in 1900, Alice helped her brother, George W. Compton, rear his two sons and also cared for other nephews. Alice remained with her family until a short time before her death in 1942.
The Comptons were in Washington, County Texas for at least 25 years. In 1910 they were living in Justice Pre.# 4, Uvalde, TX, and in 1920 and 1930 living in Poteet, Atascosa, TX according to census records. In a letter from Helen Compton Howard, posted Aug. 6, 1942, Poteet, TX, "Aunt Alice passed away on July 16 and was buried on July 17". She died in Bexar County, but was buried in Poteet.
My grandmother was named for her, and I was named Alice for my grandmother, Alice B. Compton Smith, #85217454 F.A.G.
