Henry Clay Compton was the third son born to Rebecca McCain Compton and Robert S. Compton in Montgomery, AL. He and seven of his family moved to Washington County, Texas in 1875. His father, Robert S. Compton, was buried in Oak Rest Cemetery, May 31, 1880, Indp.-Gay Hill in Washington County, Texas. Clay remained head of household after his father passed away in 1880. Henry Clay never married. By 1910 he was living in Uvalde County, Precinct 4. His younger brother, George W. Compton, was listed as head of household and Henry Clay as his brother. Later, his nephew, George H. Compton, named his only son, Chester Clay Compton after him. Clay was a farmer and worked hard all of his life providing for his family, as did his sister, Alice B. Compton, who also never married.
