The 1949 county accident toll stood at nine today after three automobile crashes on the rain pelted highways yesterday afternoon brought death to two persons and injured seven others, one critically.

Mrs. Sarah Greening, 80, of Hanna, died a little before midnight of injuries received in a two car crash at 3:10 on Long Lane rd near Wellsboro. She was the second victim of the mishap which instantly killed Edward Hoeppner, 57, of route 1 Union Mills, a Union Township farmer.

Two persons remain in Fairview hospital today as a result of the crash. They are Mrs. Felma Hoeppner, 54, wife of the dead man, and Mrs. May Weaver, 32, of Hanna. Hospital authorities said that Mrs. Hoeppner is in critical condition, but added that Mrs. Weaver is showing improvement.

State Trooper Cliff Ward said the crash occurred at the intersection of Long Lane road and a cross road near Wellsboro, Hoeppner, driving a car west on the cross road, apparently went through a stop sign, Ward said.

A car driven by Elroy Weaver, 39, of Hanna, traveling south on the Long Lane road plowed into the side of the Hoeppner car, Ward explained. The Weavers, including their small daughter Kathleen, 2, were rushed to the hospital along with Mrs. Greening, who was a passenger in their car, and the Hoeppner's. The Kosanke ambulance took them to the Fairview hospital.

Mr. Weaver and Kathleen were released from the hospital later last night.

Ward said both cars were totally destroyed by the impact of the collison.

from the 3/31/1949 La Porte Herald Argus.

Services will be held at 1:15 PM Saturday at the Kosanke Bros. chapel in Union Mills, and at 2 PM in the Tracy Lutheran church, burial will be in the church cemetery.

Edward John William Hoeppner was baptized on 28 August 1891 at Immanuel Ev Lutheran Church, Tracy, Indiana by Pastor Gunka.
